Oleg Vollenweider began his musical journey at the age of 10 when he started taking piano lessons. Shortly after, he began composing, singing, and playing the drums, eventually developing a passion for the guitar. During middle and high school, he participated in various school bands, and at 14, he formed his own group called "Metro."
After graduating from high school, Oleg pursued music studies at the State Academy of Culture in Kharkiv, Ukraine. For four years he studied with Vitaly Petrov and performed as an electric guitarist in an original fusion quintet led by keyboardist and composer Leonid Heisman.
In 1994, Oleg moved to the USA and continued his music education at the University of Maine in Orono, where he studied guitar under Keith Crook, and performed with UMaine Jazz Ensemble, led by Dr. Karel Lidral. He graduated with a Master's degree in Guitar Performance in 1997. While in Maine, he recorded his first studio projects and collaborated with the Nathan George Quartet, performing at jazz gigs, as well as with his rock band "Alien Fame."
Oleg's passion for sound and composition took a new direction after relocating to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1997. He entered the Composition and Electronic Music program at Cleveland State University. His instructors included Dr. Greg D'Alessio, Dr. Andrew Rindfleish, and virtuoso saxophonist, composer, and arranger Howie Smith. Three years later, he earned a Master's degree in Music Composition.
In 2001, he began a seven-year voyage at Michigan State University, culminating in the defense of his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition in 2008. His faculty included Dr. Mark Sullivan, Dr. Charles Ruggiero, Dr. Jere Hutcheson, and Rodney Whitaker, the director of jazz studies.
In 2009, Oleg joined the United States Army, serving as a bandsman for the next seven years as a guitar player and auxiliary percussionist. His assignments included performances with the Fort Benning Band in Georgia and the 10th Mountain Division Band at Fort Drum, New York.
After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army, Oleg relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, where he still resides. He collaborates with many musicians and teaches music. His hobbies include yoga, Buddhism, and exploring Eastern philosophies and history in general.
